Boundaries to Collaboration, people need to want to cross

Check out a great post by Steward Mader on organizations with boundaries to collaboration

This is something I have seen so many times.  Clients which are so silo’ed, they are practically a dysfunctional family.  Social networking can help break down these barriers, but it has to start with the people.  I remember asking a client for something (back in Web1.0), and she said, “but that is not my job”.  She had her silo, and was completely comfortable staying there.  It is great to see many of our clients embracing the change, but as always, there are some who don’t see the need to change.

p.s. if you noticed a sudden increase in my blogging tonight (on all my blogs), it is because my baby is having a nice long nap.

Web tidbit

My web tidbit for the day:

  • every time you sign up for a new web site, the first thing you should do is logout and then login again.  This way Firefox remembers your username and password.

Introducing …. me

Jennifer Nolan | clients, facebook, storming, web2.0 | Monday, February 4th, 2008

The team of three, is now the team of four. I have just returned from 1 year of Maternity leave and have re-joined the Web2.0 gang in IBM Global Services Toronto. (We really do need to get an official title, but that is what I am calling us) I was extremely glad to hear that we had scooped up Sacha when she finished her studies. We all bring something different to the team and it has been a thrill watching the team work together (even though there was a little storming happening).

When I left the group in their capable hands I wondered how the Web2.0 world would change while I was away.

Things that have not changed:

  • it is still called Web2.0
  • it is still the people who are driving the change bottom-up

Things that have changed:

  • many of our customers now “get it”
  • social networks are for everyone, not just the geeks (although if I get an invite for one more network……)
  • more people seem to understand the breadth of Web2.0 (and not just one facet e.g. RIA)
